Riyadh: A massive fire broke out in a residential complex of the Saudi Aramco oil company in Saudi Arabia's Al Khobar city on Sunday, in which at least 11 were killed and 219 injured.

Civil Defence spokesman Ali al Qahtani said on Twitter that some of the injured are in critical condition and that the victims were of various nationalities and worked for the Saudi Aramco oil giant.

The complex is home to employees of the oil giant. An investigation has been launched into the incident. Civil defence authorities said the fire started in the basement of a tower in the complex.

Saudi Aramco is the world's largest oil firm in terms of crude production and exports. It has more than 61,000 workers worldwide from 77 countries.

Foreigners make up about a third of Saudi Arabia's population of 30.8 million.
