Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said today that the fighting was ongoing not only in the town of Marea but also in the surrounding villages. Among the 47 killed, 20 belonged to the Islamist and other rebels and 27 belonged to IS jihadists, according to a report in Times of India.

Marea is one of the key towns that is in control of the rebels and IS has been trying to take hold of the town for a few months now. Last week IS reportedly captured five villages surrounding Maria after allegedly using chemical agents in its attack. The capture of Marea town is also vital for IS as Maria lies on an important supply route that runs to the Turkish border.
