Army Day commemorates the proud sons of India

New Delhi: The Army Day is not just observed to laud the nation's military prowess but to remember the selfless sacrifices made by the jawans to ensure the sovereignty of the country.

There are people after whom no roads are named nor statues built but a thousand countrymen remain speechless when their bodies return wrapped in the tricolor.

They are the proud sons of our motherland whose only goal is to save the nation from foreign forces.

15th January is the day when India upholds the bravery of the soldiers.

History: India celebrated its first Army Day on 15 January 1949 when Lieutenant General K M Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, General Sir Francis Butcher.

Army Day 2016: This year the day was observed remembering the indomitable courage showed by the armed forces to thwart the Pakistani forces. The force also helped in the rescue in the flood-ravaged southern India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday he tweeted, "Saluting the indomitable valour, determination & dedication of our Army on Army Day."
