Patna, Thousands of lawyers in Bihar on Wednesday abstained from work, protesting against the lack of initiative by the Patna High Court on their demand to allow unrestricted entry of vigilance officials into the premises of subordinate courts.patna_city_20120507

Their demand was in order to curb the prevailing corruption in the judicial system.

The Bihar State Bar Council (BSBC) appealed to all advocates from district and sub- divisional courts, tribunals as well as those practicing at the Patna High Court to abstain from court work on July 15, said Akhouri Mangla Charan Srivastava, chairman of BSBC.

He said that the protest hit most courts including the Patna High Court.

“Our strike was very effective,” Srivastava said.

Alarmed over the rising number of deaths due to lightning strikes, the Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) has signed an agreement with Bangaluru-based Earth Networks to set up a lightning forecast system in the state.

Earth Networks monitors and collects data on lightning strikes around the world.
Its system will inform the BSDMA, District Collectors, Municipal Officers and other public representatives about an impending lightning strike 30 minutes before its occurrence.

“The authorities will then send alerts on a mobile application, which will help save lives in the state. No mobile service provider has been selected so far to send the alerts,” a BSDMA official said.
