Airtel Displays Fastest Download Speed, Jio tops 4G Availability

Bharti Airtel has displayed fastest download speeds of 9.6 mbps and best video experience across all telecom circles in India, while Reliance Jio has extended its 4G availability to 97 per cent, according to OpenSignal’s latest mobile network experience report.

Airtel has excelled in the download speed experience category by scoring 9.6 mbps, followed by Vodafone (7.9 mbps), Idea (7.6 mbps), Jio (6.7 mbps) and 3G-only BSNL (3.1 mbps).

The download speeds are key for streaming of online content, especially videos and games, said mobile analytics company Opensignal.

Latency is crucial for response time. Jio has won the battle on latency with users on its network experiencing response time of 54.2 milliseconds, followed by Airtel at 57.1 milliseconds.

The latencies have improved over the past six months across all operators. As per April 2019 data, Jio’s latency was 62.5 milliseconds.

“The lower latency is on a network, the better experience you’ll receive on a host of mobile applications and services, from web browsing to voice over IP to real-time multi-player gaming,” the report says.

Vodafone topped in voice app experience — a new metric introduced by Opensignal in the latest survey. This captures the quality perceived by users of voice communication mobile apps — WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Skype.

Congratulating Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for his leadership of the organisation, Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani said on Monday that the collaboration between Microsoft and Jio would be the defining partnership of the decade.

The partnership between the two organizations, announced at the Microsoft’ “Future Decoded Summit’ here, is aimed at helping organisations of all sizes in the country scale their businesses.

“Every entrepreneur in India has the potential to become a Dhirubhai Ambani or Bill Gates,” Ambani said during a fireside chat session with Nadella. Saying that India has transformed tremendously over the past two decades — from a $300 billion economy in early 1990s to becoming a $3 trillion economy in 2020 — Ambani stressed that India is on track to become one of the top three economies of the world.

Ambani said that the mindset to leverage the use of technology already exists in India, but the partnership between Jio and Microsoft will help organizations to get the digital toolset to scale their businesses.

About 38 crore people have migrated to the 4G technology platform offered by Jio in about three years, Ambani informed, adding that since the establishment of Jio, average data rate has come down drastically in India — from Rs 300-Rs 500 per GB to Rs 12-Rs14 per GB.

The partnership between the two organizations, announced at the Microsoft’ “Future Decoded Summit’ here, is aimed at helping organisations of all sizes in the country scale their businesses. IANS

Nadella said that the mission of Microsoft is to help organisation to become independent — not dependent — to build their own Artificial Intelligence and other tech capabilities, and tech intensity. “In the next decade, our main investment will be on making software engineeres that organisations hire more productive,” Nadella said, adding that Microsoft will build complete toolchain for developers. The Microsoft CEO said that the increasing rate of digitization of people, places, and things, will be the defining secular trend over the next 10 years.

Saying that Microsoft’s differentiated approach across the cloud and edge is winning customers, Nadella said that Microsoft now has 57 data centre regions in the world.

In India, Microsoft has three data centre regions — Mumbai, Pune and Chennai — besides a Cybersecurity Engagement Centre in New Delhi. (IANS)

Taking on Airtel, Reliance Jio on Wednesday announced the availability of nation-wide Voice and Video over Wi-Fi service which will work on any Wi-Fi, anywhere in India and supports over 150 handset models.

The service makes crystal-clear voice and video calls through Wi-Fi at no additional cost.

“To further reinforce its customer-obsession and offer the best products and experience to its consumers, Jio today announced the launch of nation-wide Voice and Video over Wi-Fi service. Jio has been testing this service over the past few months, to provide a robust experience to every customer at launch,” the company said.

The key differentiators that come with Jio Wi-Fi Calling are, Jio said, are that customers can use any Wi-Fi network for Jio Wi-Fi-calling and the voice and video calls will seamlessly switch-over between VoLTE and Wi-Fi to provide an enhanced voice/video-calling experience.

“Jio Wi-Fi calling works on the largest ecosystem of handsets. Jio customers can also make Video over Wi-Fi calls And all of this comes at no additional cost!” it said.

On the launch of this service, Jio Director Akash Ambani said: “At Jio, we are constantly innovating to enhance customer experience or solve their problems. At this juncture, when an average Jio consumer uses over 900 minutes of voice calls every month, and at a growing base of consumers, the launch of Jio Wi-Fi Calling will further enhance every Jio consumer’s voice-calling experience, which is already a benchmark for the industry with India’s-first all VoLTE network.”

Reliance Jio added over 91 lakh new subscribers in October, taking its total subscriber base to 36.43 crore, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Interestingly, this increase in the number of subscribers for Jio comes although in the same month it announced to charge calls to other operators.

Reliance Industries (RIL), the parent company of Jio on October 9 that it will charge customers 6 paise per minute for voice calls made to other networks to compensate for the interconnect fee.

Further, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea also added to their subscriber base, which have for some time now have mostly reported loss of subscribers.

India’s largest operator in terms of subscribers, Vodafone Idea added nearly 1.9 lakh new customers during the period under review to its overall tally to around 37.27 crore. Around 81,974 subscribers were added by Bharti Airtel and its subscriber base by the end of October stood at 32.56 crore.

“Wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 659.18 million at the end of September 2019 to 662.92 million at the end of October 2019, and wireless subscription in rural areas also increased from 514.56 million at the end of September 2019 to 520.48 million at the end of October 2019. Monthly growth rates of urban and rural wireless subscription were 0.57 per cent and 1.15 per cent respectively,” it added. (IANS)
