‘Men Written by Women’ is trending on many social media platforms

If you're a little bit of a social bee, you might have come across the trend of 'Men Written by Women' on Twitter. Basically, this trend aims to highlight the huge difference between the mindset and approaches of men and women writers while writing characters for movies.

Interestingly, when male characters which were written by women and male characters which were written by men were compared, it was observed that male characters written by female writers were more caring, loving, understanding, and supportive. Whereas, male characters written by male writers were more aggressive, and dominant, and sort of showed the idea of toxic masculinity.

Some of the comparisons between 'men written by women' and 'men written by men' which became quite famous on social media apps are as follows:

Men Written by Women VS Men Written by Men

1. Character of Rana (played by Irrfan Khan) in 'Piku' was written by Juhi Chaturvedi. This character had the qualities of being kind and patient. Whereas, character of Kabir Singh (played by Shahid Kapoor) in 'Kabir Singh' was written by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. This character was aggressive, alcoholic, and dominant throughout.

2. Characters of Kabir Mehra (played by Ranveer Singh) and Sunny Gill (played by Farhan Akhtar) in 'Dil Dhadakne Do' were written by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar. The friendship between these characters was healthier and beautiful. On the other hand, characters of Rajat (played by Kartik Aryan), Nishant (played by Divyenndu), and Vikrant (played by Raayo S. Bakhirta) in 'Pyar Ka Punchnama' were written by Luv Ranjan, and these characters depicted nothing by the “chocolaty/flirty nature" of boys.

3. Character of Dr. Jahangir (played by Shah Rukh Khan) in 'Dear Zindagi' was written by Gauri Shindi, and it is believed to be one of the more therapeutic characters ever written. The way Dr. Jahangir said “no" to Kaira's (Alia Bhatt) proposal was beautiful in its own way. On the other hand, character of Dev (played by Abhay Deol) in 'Dev D' was written by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane, and was very disturbing and hostile in nature.

The differences in the nature of these characters show how 'Men Written by Women' is trending and getting more appreciation than 'Men Written by Men'. Well, as fictional characters are a writer's own shadow, hence it shows how women write characters in a more simpler way than men, who show the complicated nature of men unknowingly.

Children playing ringa ringa roses in an open backyard in England

Great historic events that have shaped the world and changed the outlines of countries are often not recorded in memory, or so we think. Wars made sure to destroy evidence and heritage, and the ones who survived told the tale of what really happened. Folklore, albeit through oral tradition kept alive many such stories, hidden in verse, limericks, and rhymes.

Ringa-ringa-roses, a common playtime rhyme among children across the world, is an example of folklore that has survived for many centuries. It tells the story of the The Great Plague of London which ravaged the city between 1665-1666.

Certain tribes have remained matrilineal, where the decision-making power rests with the eldest female of the family.

In modern times, many social movements aim to bring reform to the society we live in, on the basis of certain existing patterns. Patriarchy is something that many aim to cleanse our cultures of, to usher in the era of social and gender equality. Despite all these so-called movements, in southern India, certain societies that patronise matriarchy have existed since before India's independence. The Nairs and Ezhavas of Kerala, and Bunts and Billavas of Karnataka are matrilineal societies that continue to thrive in a patriarchal country.

Kerala remains separate from the rest of India in many ways. Be it literacy policy, form of government, or cultural practices, this state does not always conform to the ideal that India is known for. Even so with their social structure. Certain tribes have remained matrilineal, where the decision-making power rests with the eldest female of the family.
