It’s that time of the year where the students have completed their 10th standard board exams and are anxiously waiting for their ICSE, CBSE results. It is also the time in which these students have to make a life decision regarding their career path, in order to shape their future towards their passion and goal. Often when students are asked about their passion or where they see themselves in the next ten years, they seem clueless. Normally, students are not aware that the stream they choose after their 10th standard is the first step towards shaping their future, making it a critical and a crucial one. Often this choice is made immaturely, where the students choose a specific stream because their parents want them to do so or because they don’t want to leave their friend circle, etc. resulting in the students hating their subjects or having to drop out midway. They do not actually spend the time to think about how this choice should be pondered over and decided wisely after analyzing oneself and researching about the right stream that would be well suited for the student.

Hence, here are few tips that will nurture the student in a way to make the right choice.

  1. Self-awareness:

The student should be well aware of their interests, strengths and weaknesses this involves analyzing and understanding their skills as well which will be the first step in helping them choose the right stream. An example to understand this scenario is given below:

  • Do I really like Math? (Identifying the interest)
  • Am I good at Math? (Judging the skills)
  • Can I be good in Math if I get all coaching and guidance? (Understanding the aptitude, i.e the ability to reach the required skill)

When an analysis is done, it will help the student to have a clear idea about oneself and will help in making the right choice.

  1. Discussion with parents/ teachers/ seniors:

When an important decision is required it is always preferred that a discussion is to be made with the seniors and experts. The same should be followed by students’ which will help in clearing their unsolved doubts and gain more knowledge. Having a healthy discussion with parents is also necessary which will help the student to analyze more efficiently on how their passion can be followed and not having to forcefully choose their parent’s decision.

  1. Visiting a career guidance counselor:

Certain instances where the student isn’t convinced and confident about the path to be chosen even after having discussions with teachers and seniors, in that case, the student can meet a career guidance counselor in which they help the student to know the right stream through scientifically designed and formulated methods. Another advantage of attending career guidance, educational fairs and seminars will help the student to explore career choices and plan their next step.

  1. Decision making and taking an action:

This is the final stage while choosing a stream after all the knowledge is gathered and obtained through various means. It finally comes to making your own decision which would shape your future. One can be successful in any career if one puts all their interest and effort to be the best as there are lots of opportunities. Hence, choose wisely and stay focused.

Parent’s role:

Parents have a crucial role in shaping their child’s future. They should be motivating and positive, helping their child to explore the right stream based on the child’s passion and interest. Parents should be open minded and not impose their decision on children while choosing the stream. Positive parenting like giving valuable advice and supporting the child is required. This will help to build a healthy relationship between the parent and child.

From the tips given, it will help the student to analyze and choose the right stream to shape their future.
