Colour coordinated cushions

Cushions are a symbol of high fashion in today's décor world. These soft accessories of our living rooms are not very useful anymore given how much our furniture has evolved to suit our needs. Cushions have come to serve as props that add colour and elegance, and in some ways, depict the mood of the interior.

In the beginning of the tradition, cushions were used in the same way as pillows – to support the body while resting. They were placed in certain strategic positions of the body and served to relax the muscles that held the body up while sleeping. When furniture began to be designed with upholstery, cushions lost their significance.

For the most part of history, cushions have always served as the luxury of the rich. Lower class citizens who could not afford cushions slept with their elbow supporting their head. In some eastern cultures, pillows were made of hard bamboo or wood as it was believed to affect mortality. Cushions were usually arranged in areas where they were visible to everyone and seldom in bedrooms.

During festivals, especially in India, it is tradition to have guests over. The décor matters greatly even today, which depicts how wealthy or prosperous the household is. Patterned cushions, laced cushion covers, beaded edges, and sequinned tops are an important way to convey the status of the host.

Size of the cushions also matter, depending on whether they play the role of added back support, or simply adorn the furniture. Plush, soft, and silky cushions are always preferred to hard, utilitarian ones. These days round cushions are preferred to the standard square ones, and in some households, stuffed toys do the trick in upping the cuteness quotient.

"The discovery of each new world provides a unique glimpse into the physics that play a role in planet formation," said lead author Jon Zink, a UCLA postdoctoral scholar.

An international team of astronomers has identified 366 new exoplanets, using data from the NASA Kepler Space Telescope's K2 mission. The findings, described in a paper published in the Astronomical Journal, showed a planetary system that comprises a star and at least two gas giant planets, each roughly the size of Saturn and located unusually close to one another.

The discovery is significant because it's rare to find gas giants -- like Saturn in the solar system -- as close to their host star as they were in this case. The researchers cannot yet explain why it occurred there, but it makes the finding especially useful because it could help scientists form a more accurate understanding of the parameters for how planets and planetary systems develop.
