Has the Gun Law Culture in US done more Harm than Good to the Citizens?

Nov 20, 2016: The United States of America has many interesting and controversial laws but the Gun Law tops them all. The second amendment of the US constitution says that "a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." It is quite clear that Gun Law in the US has done more harm than good. There have been many cases of open shooting wherein innocent people have been killed.

Whether Gun Control laws could prevent 2015 Mass shooting- a post in The Guardian read, "Last Wednesday, two mass shootings happened in America. In one of them, 14 people were killed and 21 others were injured, prompting Barack Obama to describe stronger background checks for gun purchases as "common sense". Earlier, that same day, two gunmen killed one person and injured three others in Savannah, Georgia. In neither case, is there any evidence that the killers obtained their guns illegally."

Gun shooting has sadly become a common issue in the US ever since the second amendment on the gun laws. The situation, as of now, in the US can be deemed as a crisis; the gun crisis. The gun crisis gives some really disturbing data. Around 1000 mass shootings have taken place in around 1260 days. This tells us how severe the situation is. What's alarming is- in many of the cases, the arms or guns used by the shooter were not procured illegally.

Guns were in fact bought legally in the US which brings us back to the starting point, that US Constitution should implement strong gun control laws. However, the history of US carries with itself few differing thoughts on the gun control crisis. For eg: "To disarm the people is the most effectual way to enslave them", George Mason, a 17th-century politician quotes. Another great soul in the history of America, Thomas Jefferson quotes that "What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms." As we can see, many of the founding fathers and important politicians of US have claimed earlier that the possession of arms is probably not a completely bad thing. But the scenario today, in the US speaks otherwise.

America has adopted the name, "The land of guns", due to the mass shooting sprees happening constantly. However, many people claim that ownership of guns is in some way a good thing too because it can help prevent an attack on oneself. But this is again, just a meagre quantity of the total ownership of guns in the US. One can only hope and wait for a better amendment to the existing law which has definitely only worsened the condition in the States.
