Honor Set to Refresh X Series with New Camera Tech in India

Chinese smartphone major Huawei’s sub-brand Honor is set to refresh its mid-range X series in India soon and the company will introduce a new camera technology with the new iteration, Charles Peng, President, Honor India, said on Tuesday.

The handset maker is now mulling joining the pop-up selfie camera bandwagon as it aims to capture 10 per cent market share in India by 2020.

“The next smartphone in the X series line-up is going to launch soon. The new phone would not be a big change from the previous iterations (in terms of pricing) but we would show you our new camera technology with this product,” Peng told IANS here.

The previous iteration in the series — Honor 8X — was launched in India in October 2018 at a starting price of Rs 14,999. It is powered by the company’s proprietary Octa-Core Kirin 710 chipset.

Asked about the company’s proprietary HarmonyOS and whether a new device running the OS is in the offing, Peng said: “This OS is for all our devices. The first product, as you know, is the Honor Smart Screen and the OS can work with all our products, including our handsets, smart trackers and smartwatches.”

“This smart screen will launch in India soon,” Peng said without divulging further details on the timeline.

Equipped with HarmonyOS, Honor unveiled its first smart screen called “HONOR Vision Series” at the Huawei Developer Conference (HDC) in Dongguan City, China, last week.

The handset maker’s short-term goal in India for this year is to provide the best after-sales services, besides offering high-quality devices.

“We have launched 23 exclusive service centres (ESC) across India which follows same-day repair concept,” noted Peng, adding that the compnay recently launched service centres in Patna and Bhubaneswar.

Currently, 80-90 per cent of the company’s sales network is online but it expects to achieve a ratio of 80 per cent online and 20 per cent offline sales soon.

“We design our products from a global competence perspective — from designing it in Paris, acquiring camera and optics input from Japan, manufacturing processes from Germany and software from India R&D facility,” the company said. (IANS)

 There has been a 26 per cent increase in Cyber Attacks in India and Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru together accounted for roughly 38 per cent of all attacks in the July-September period, a new report said on Wednesday.

The report prepared by Bengaluru-headquartered telecom solutions provider Subex identified over 3,500 modular malware samples in the country, registering a whopping 37 per cent increase.

Smart cities, financial services and transportation sectors lead the rankings in terms of cyber attacks, said the “State of Internet of Things (IoT) Security Report” for the third quarter (July-September period).

“As the digital footprint of India increases through capital intensive projects, hackers are targeting data and large scale disruption like never before,” said said Vinod Kumar, Managing Director and CEO, Subex.

“The increase in cyber attacks against the country and the strong geopolitical correlation indicate high levels of interest in targeting our critical infrastructure. Hackers are working to improve their ability to monetize cyber attacks,” he warned.

Malware of varying degrees of sophistication are being reported from a variety of deployments, including new projects surrounding renewable energy.

Most malware detected (36 per cent) could be traced to sources on the Dark Web while as much as 14 per cent of malware couldn’t be traced to a known source pointing to the arrival of new actors and malware shops on the scene,” the findings showed.

The detection of malware connected with critical infrastructure projects has also registered an increase.

“This implies that hackers are targeting large scale disruption and are working to increase the cost associated with managing such projects as also negatively impact future investments in them,” the report added.

Independent hackers are increasingly feeling the need to monetize cyber attacks as the unit cost of malware has risen in the last quarter. Further, it is becoming increasingly difficult to source high-grade malware from multiple sources due to various factors, the report added. (IANS)
