India Offers Great Potential For YouTube’s Growth, Says Sundar Pichai

India offers great potential for Google-owned YouTube’s growth and the latest in the journey is YouTube Music that has been downloaded more than 15 million times in the country, CEO Sundar Pichai has said.

Admitting that recent ad product changes in YouTube and Search are hurting its top-line growth, the company sounded bullish on YouTube during its first quarter results on Monday.

“YouTube Music and YouTube Premium are now available in 43 countries up from five markets at the start of 2018. In mid-March, we launched YouTube Music in India, one of YouTube’s fastest growing markets.

“Since launch, the YouTube Music app has been downloaded more than 15 million times in the country,” Pichai told analysts during the company’s earnings call.

YouTube’s ad business, for both brand and direct response campaigns, continues to grow and support our creators, said the Indian-origin CEO.

Pichai said he is focused towards sanitising the content on YouTube.

“Maybe I will start with the YouTube comments. I talked about in the area of content responsibility, we are definitely focused on making sure we are constantly improving how we are handling both in terms of reducing the content and shouldn’t be there on the platform.

“More importantly, making sure when we recommend content that we are recommending high-quality content as well as reducing harmful content or low-quality content being recommended,” he emphasised.

The video sharing platform was criticised recently for hosting controversial conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, who is banned from several major social networking platforms for his offensive posts, on a two-hour long podcast episode accessible to its 1.8 billion global users.

Earlier this year, YouTube announced changes that reduce recommendations of content that comes close to violating its guidelines or that misinforms in harmful ways.

“There are a lot more improvements, which we will be rolling out in the next few weeks and our work is ongoing,” Pichai said.

On Cloud, Pichai said that nine of the world’s 10 largest media companies, seven of the 10 largest retailers and more than half of the 10 largest companies and manufacturing, financial services, communications and software use Google Cloud.

“Thomas (Kurian) is really building upon a strong foundation, but we are really accelerating and scaling up go-to-market both internally and through our channel partners has been a huge focus,” Pichai noted.

Flipkart on Thursday launched the Nokia Smart TV in India as part of their strategic partnership. Priced at Rs 41,999, the Nokia-branded smart TV is currently available in a 55-inch variant and features “Sound by JBL”.

The smart TV will be available on the e-commerce platform starting December 10 and the firm will expand the line up of 4K variants in the coming months.

“The acoustics of the Nokia Smart TV has been engineered by JBL, which will let customers experience clear vocal tones and minimal harmonic distortion. True to JBL’s brand recall, the Nokia Smart TV will also enjoy deep bass tones, typically popular with Indian audiences,” the company said in a statement.

Notably, this is the first time that JBL is extending its audio expertise in television space in India.

The TV is powered by 24 watt built-in speakers, “DTS TruSurround” and Dolby Audio to enhance the overall audio experience.

Flipkart will provide complete TV protection for Nokia-branded smart TVs, which is available at a launch price of Rs 999.

The programme gives consumers a coverage of three years against manufacturing defects and accidental damages, along with a guaranteed buyback value at the end of three years.

The Nokia Smart TV offers intelligent dimming that helps produce deeper blacks through accurate backlight control and a wide colour gamut.

It comes with the Android 9.0 Operating System (OS) that will allow users access a host of apps on the Android TV Play Store.

It sports a quad-core processor and 2.25GB RAM and 16GB ROM.
