In the last few years, there has been a steady stream of sectors that have been digitalized in India. As more and more Indians get access to the internet, more IT opportunities are presented.
Not only are international companies seeing the possibilities in India but homegrown entrepreneurs are making their claim on the lucrative markets. A great example of this is Swiggy, an India based and owned food delivery company.
Swiggy is Indias largest company within the Foodtech sector and it is predicted to be able to compete with world-dominating giants such as Amazon. Swiggy sets an important example for Indian entrepreneurs that it is possible to compete with strong international competitors.
This is important for two reasons in particular. First of all, it creates more job opportunities for the citizens of India since domestic companies are less likely to bring in foreign workers. The second reason is that it will keep most of its revenues in India facilitating continuous economic growth.
Slower development in certain sectors
Yet there are some sectors within India that could easily be developed that have yet to see digital improvements. One of these sectors is lotteries.
The government-controlled lotteries have yet to see much needed IT advances. Indian entrepreneurs, on the other hand, are more in tune with the needs and wants of the modern consumer and have created services surrounding online lotteries.
One of those services are websites focusing on online lottery in India and they are becoming increasingly popular. This, of course, stipulates yet another problem. Online lotteries are almost exclusively from other countries meaning more and more rupees are leaving the country as each day passes.
In 2018 nine state governments fetched nearly Rs 3,950 crore GST from lottery sales. These numbers might shrink if digital updates aren’t made.
Qualified Job Opportunites
There are many ample opportunities available for Indian IT entrepreneurs once the state governments realize the need for digital evolution.
Front-end, back-end and full-stack developers would receive an immense amount of billable hours constructing lottery platforms. Digital graphic designers would be able to help with brand guidelines and creating an online image.
Payment methods that suit Indian consumers better would also need to be implemented. Especially mobile payments since smartphones are playing such a huge part in the digitization of the country.
Digital security experts would also be needed to create a safe playing environment that is much needed since traditional government lotteries are plagued by counterfeit tickets.
All these changes would also be in line with government efforts to make India more modern. There are several goals set including making rural India a part of the internet penetration, a move towards a more cashless society for increased safety and control and increasing efficiency with the help of big data.
Yet there are specks of hope when it comes to improving state lotteries with the Sikkim government leading the way. Not only has their online lottery Playwin increased the safety for thousands of players but it has also created a significant amount of qualified work opportunities.
One can only hope that this step will be mirrored by the other governments creating more job opportunities, increased safety and a means of maintaining the positive economic growth in the country.
