Merits of Desi Ghee Re-emerges: Find out what makes it so good for you!

by Dr. J K Bhutani

Based upon emerging medical research, the merits of desi ghee (clarified butter) are re-emerging, says Dr. Bhutani.

'FATS are Sin' is passé. The SUGAR is the new anathema and SIN….!

The saturated fats and the dietary cholesterol restrictions of less than 300 mg per day are being changed as a recent report of 'American Heart Association (AHA/ACC)' has concluded that there's insufficient evidence to show that restricting dietary cholesterol lowers low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C) or the popularly known 'bad- cholesterol'. The evidence of refined carbohydrates and sugars especially sucrose and fructose causing the changes in LDL, HDL is accumulating. These also cause elevated levels of glucose and insulin, along with insulin and leptin resistance, all contributing to high CHD risk.

The REFINED sugar is the NEW CULPRIT to whip….NO MORE than 200 calories should be consumed or daily intake should not exceed 10 percent of total daily caloric needs, say the latest guidelines.

DESI GHEE, and especially the COW's is not BAD as are the trans-fats, processed fatty-foods or hydrogenated vegetable oils. Trans -fat raises the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol and also lowers high-density lipoprotein (good) cholesterol in the blood. Trans- fat is found in many processed foods made in hydrogenated vegetable oils especially the ones which are REPEATEDLY boiled as in making snacks like ' Samosa or Fried Chicken. Even cookies, crackers, chips and other OTC snacks must be checked for 'zero-trans-fats' labels.
The loads of benefits of 'DESI GHEE' are attributed to the beneficial cholesterol (used for variety of hormones, brain and other tissues), omega 3-omega 6 fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins and many essential minerals and nutrients….!

Saturated fats of Desi-Ghee helps mobilize unhealthy liver-fats, improve immunity by helping WBCs fight viruses and bacteria (we too found benefits of Cow's Desi Ghee in Dengue epidemic of 2015-unpublished) and improves strength in men by increasing testosterone and femininity in women by increasing estrogen levels…!

  • Anti-oxidants in Ghee make it a natural anti-wrinkling and anti-ageing to bank upon..!
  • Desi-Ghee is good for bones, joints as a strengthening (Ca,Phos,Vit-D), lubricating agent and retards wear and tear of joints because of anti-oxidants..!.
  • Ghee takes nutrients from food to deliver them through fat permeable membranes especially in the brain…!
  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), omega 3-6 essential-fatty acids and fat soluble vitamins like A, E, D and K. Ghee has just what you need for a healthy heart…!
  • ABOVE ALL….Ghee improves satiety signals and helps eat RIGHT amounts and quantity, if one listens to the hunger cues and honors it….!

One can take Desi-ghee with each meal and should limit according to the physical activity and other needs (15- 50 gms/day) The best Ghee is the one made at home from an Indian DESI cow's milk…! REMEMBER..Heart disease, obesity, diabetes are caused by inactivity, trans fats, refined carbs, and overeating, to name a few….but not saturated fats/DESI-GHEE. !
'Yaavat jeevet sukham jeevet, ruNam krutwa ghrutame peebet' (Till such time you are alive, live happily…take a loan, but drink ghee!
