In India, November 11 is celebrated as National Education Day

In India, November 11 is celebrated as National Education Day. This day marks the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who was the first education minister of independent India. He served the country from 1947 to 1958, and was a significant part of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet.

It must be noted that India has been observing National Education Day since 2008. Interestingly, on this day, various educational institutions like schools and colleges host different kinds of programs and functions. On this day, students and teachers come together to talk about importance of education in all spheres of life.

During the time of his tenure as the education minister, University Grants Commission (UGC), AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) Kharagpur Institute of Higher Education, University Education Commission, and the Secondary Education Commission were set up.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad strongly advocated for women's education. In fact, in the Central Assembly in 1949, he said that national education can not be appropriate if it does not give consideration for the advancement of one-half of the society, i.e women. He also stressed for the modern education system, and stressed on the use of English language for educational advantages. But, he was of the view that primary education should be imparted in the mother-tongue.

In the year 2008, the Ministry of Education which was then the Ministry of Human Resource Development announced to commemorate the birthday of this great Indian by recalling his contribution to the cause of education in India. Since then, his birthday is celebrated as National Education Day.
