New Delhi, September 21, 2017 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday greeted the nation on the auspicious occasion of Navratri.

“Navratri greetings to everyone… On the first day of Navratri, we pray to Maa Shailputri,” Modi tweeted.

The nine-day long festival is dedicated to goddess Durga. Each day, the nine forms of the goddess are worshipped.

Also known as Parvati and Hemavati, Goddess Shailputri, who is believed to govern the Moon, is worshiped on the first day of Navratri.

Devotees believe any possible negative effect of the Moon, the provider of all fortunes, can be overcome by praying to Maa Shaiputri, an avatar of Adi Shakti.

The nine-day festival will conclude on September 30 with the Dussehra celebrations. (IANS)
