Bollywood Actress Priyanka Chopra.

Global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas came onboard as the chairperson of The Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) film festival -- announced on Tuesday. She was unanimously nominated by the MAMI's Board of Trustees comprising Nita M. Ambani (Co-Chairperson), Anupama Chopra (Festival Director). The board also welcomed two new members to its fold, acclaimed filmmaker Anjali Menon and renowned filmmaker and archivist Shivendra Singh Dungarpur.

Speaking on the occasion, Priyanka said: "I'm so proud to be taking on the role of Chairperson of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. I'm really looking forward to working alongside these powerhouse women, Isha Ambani, Anupama Chopra, Smriti Kiran and the rest of the team, to take the festival to the next level.

"I've hit the road running... with ideas, thoughts and plans on reimagining the festival to find its rightful place in a world that has changed so much in such a short time. We're all consuming film and entertainment very differently now and in the process, we've expanded the footprint of the cinema that we watch.

"I have always been a huge supporter and believer in films from across India and together, we hope to create a strong platform to showcase Indian cinema to the world."

Adapting to a new paradigm, Jio MAMI 2.0 will have an expanded timeline. Instead of a film festival that happens over a week, Jio MAMI is now going to pan out from October 2021 to March 2022. From October onwards until January, under the Year Round Programme, apart from Dial M For Films it will hold select digital screenings and masterclasses featuring talent from all over the world.

The hybrid edition of the festival will take place in March depending on how the Covid-19 situation unfolds in India. The tentative dates of the festival are March 11 to March 15, 2022.(IANS/PP)

Children playing ringa ringa roses in an open backyard in England

Great historic events that have shaped the world and changed the outlines of countries are often not recorded in memory, or so we think. Wars made sure to destroy evidence and heritage, and the ones who survived told the tale of what really happened. Folklore, albeit through oral tradition kept alive many such stories, hidden in verse, limericks, and rhymes.

Ringa-ringa-roses, a common playtime rhyme among children across the world, is an example of folklore that has survived for many centuries. It tells the story of the The Great Plague of London which ravaged the city between 1665-1666.

Certain tribes have remained matrilineal, where the decision-making power rests with the eldest female of the family.

In modern times, many social movements aim to bring reform to the society we live in, on the basis of certain existing patterns. Patriarchy is something that many aim to cleanse our cultures of, to usher in the era of social and gender equality. Despite all these so-called movements, in southern India, certain societies that patronise matriarchy have existed since before India's independence. The Nairs and Ezhavas of Kerala, and Bunts and Billavas of Karnataka are matrilineal societies that continue to thrive in a patriarchal country.

Kerala remains separate from the rest of India in many ways. Be it literacy policy, form of government, or cultural practices, this state does not always conform to the ideal that India is known for. Even so with their social structure. Certain tribes have remained matrilineal, where the decision-making power rests with the eldest female of the family.
