Apart from keeping your gut healthy, consuming a diet rich in probiotics — also called as “good” or “helpful” bacteria — may cut the risk of osteoporosis, an age-related bone loss condition that causes fractures among one in three women over age 50 worldwide, finds a study.

In the study, older women who received probiotics, the risk of bone loss was halved compared to women who received only a placebo.

“Older women are at risk the most of osteoporosis and fractures. Treatment with probiotics can be an effective and safe way to prevent the onset of osteoporosis in many older people in the future,” said Mattias Lorentzon, Professor at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Brittleness of the bones, or osteoporosis, is characterised by porous and weak bones, which can cause them to break even when subjected to low loads, such as a fall from a standing height.

According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, the condition causes more than 8.9 million fractures annually, resulting in an osteoporotic fracture every three seconds.

Worldwide, one in three women over the age of 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures, as will one in five men over the same age.

The findings, published in the Journal of Internal Medicine, also opens the door to a new way to prevent fractures among the elderly.

For the study, the team ingested a powder that contained either Lactobacillus reuteri 6475 bacteria — health-promoting bacteria — or a placebo every day for a whole year in nearly 100 elderly women, 76 years old on average.

The women who received the powder with active bacteria had lost only half as much bone in the skeleton compared with those who received inactive powders.

“Another positive outcome from the study was that the treatment was well tolerated and did not produce more side effects than those experienced by women who received the placebo,” the researchers noted. (IANS)

Researchers have found that probiotics may be an effective alternative to antibiotics to treat acne which are often caused due to chronic inflammation.

Prebiotics are non-digestible fibres which promote the growth of healthy bacteria (probiotics) in the intestine. Naturally one can obtain prebiotics from certain whole cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables.

Chronic inflammation refers to a prolonged inflammatory response that involves a progressive change in the type of cells present at the site of inflammation.
It is characterised by the simultaneous destruction and repair of the tissue from the inflammatory process.

“As viable microbial dietary supplements, probiotics provide health benefits through fighting pathogens and maintaining the homeostasis of the gut and skin microbiome,” said study researchers from Rasoul Akram Hospital in Iran.

According to the study, published in Dermatologic Therapy, the increasing resistance to antibiotics has decreased their effectiveness in treating acne.

For the findings, the research team examined the results of all relevant published studies on the use of probiotics in creams or oral medications for treating acne.

The results suggest that probiotics may help augment the skin’s natural defences against acne.

“Oral administration of probiotics was found to constitute an adjuvant therapy to conventional modalities for treating mild-to-moderate acne vulgaris,” the study researchers wrote.

“Further research is recommended that looks into the long-term effects of probiotics on acne lesions given the short-term type of studies cited,” said senior author Masoumeh Mohamadi. (IANS)

Having probiotics can not only regulate gut bacteria — trillions of microorganisms in the gut which perform key functions in the immune system and metabolism — but also improve brain function and, thus, reduce anxiety, find researchers.

Probiotics are living organisms found naturally in some foods that are also known as “good” or “friendly” bacteria because they fight against harmful bacteria and prevent them from settling in the gut.

Recent research also suggests that mental disorders could be treated by regulating the intestinal microbiota, but there was no specific evidence to support this.

“Gut microbiota can help regulate brain function through something called the ‘gut-brain axis,’” found the researchers from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

To reach this conclusion, the researchers reviewed 21 studies that had looked at 1,503 people collectively.

The team found that probiotic supplements in seven studies within their analysis contained only one kind of probiotic, two studies used a product that contained two kinds of probiotics, and the supplements used in the other five studies included at least three kinds.

Overall, 11 of the 21 studies showed a positive effect on anxiety symptoms by regulating intestinal microbiota, meaning that more than half (52 per cent) of the studies showed this approach to be effective.

Of the 14 studies that had used probiotics as the intervention, more than a third (36 per cent) found them to be effective in reducing anxiety symptoms, while six of the remaining seven studies that had used non-probiotics as interventions found those to be effective – a 86 per cent rate of effectiveness.

Non-probiotic interventions were also more effective.

Most of the studies did not report serious adverse events, and only four studies reported mild adverse effects such as dry mouth and diarrhoea.

“People who experience anxiety symptoms might be helped by taking steps to regulate the microorganisms in their gut using probiotic and non-probiotic food and supplements,” suggested the review of studies published in the journal General Psychiatry.

Feeding probiotics to infants and children daily may significantly stave off the need for antibiotic treatment, a finding that may help address the global rise in drug-resistant infections, said researchers.

The study found that infants and children were 29 per cent less likely to have been prescribed antibiotics if they received probiotics as a daily health supplement.

The results, published in the European Journal of Public Health, are very intriguing, the researchers said.

“Given this finding, potentially one way to reduce the use of antibiotics is to use probiotics on a regular basis,” said Daniel Merenstein, professor at Georgetown University.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), antibiotic resistance occurred among 500,000 people with suspected bacterial infections across 22 countries.

Reducing the use of antibiotics is one strategy in combating resistance.

“We already have evidence that consuming probiotics reduces the incidence, duration, and severity of certain types of common acute respiratory and gastrointestinal infections,” Merenstein said.

However, it is not clear how probiotics help fight infections.

Merenstein said: “There are many potential mechanisms, such as probiotic production of pathogen inhibitors, immune regulation, among others.

“We don’t know all the mechanisms probiotic strains may leverage. But since most of the human immune system is found in the gastrointestinal tract, ingesting healthy bacteria may competitively exclude bacterial pathogens linked to gut infections and may prime the immune system to fight others,” he explained.
