Thesebeautiful diyas hold a deep significance and are symbolic of our journey to enlightenment.

Interestingly, as a diya comprises up of three things, namely–oil, diya, and wick. Therefore, the oil in the diya symbolises negative thoughts in the human mind and the wick symbolises the atma or soul. Therefore, lighting of diyas basically signifies getting rid of selfish thoughts.

In fact, in India, not just on diwali, but on regular days as well, almost every household has a custom of lighting a diya twice a day, i.e. in the morning and evening. This is a part of prayer, and moreover, all ceremonies, daily worship rituals, auspicious functions, religious occasions as well as new ventures start with lightning of lamp or diya.

It must be noted that diya is quite essential in Hinduism as it signifies goodness, purity, good luck, and power. At the same time, as presence of light means the non-existence of darkness and evil forces, hence millions of diyas are lit on the occasion of Diwali.

Also, as Diwali is observed on the new moon day, when there is supreme darkness everywhere; people light millions of lamps to get rid of the darkness. Another reason behind lighting diyas is that as evil forces gain power in darkness, hence diyas are lit in every corner of the house to weaken those evil forces.

It is recommended that one should purchase diyas on Ashwin Purnima, which is a full moon day, 15 days prior to Diwali. After purchasing diyas, they are supposed to be soaked in water till they are saturated and then they are ready for the Diwali puja.

So, this Diwali, light as many diyas as you can and get rid of all the evil forces and negative thoughts, and start your journey towards enlightenment!
