Teachers are among the few individuals in our life who express happiness when we, their students, outperform them.

"The true teachers are those who help us think for ourselves." — Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Teachers instill in us a desire to do well and achieve in life. Teachers' Day, also known as Shikshak Divas in India, is observed to recognize the efforts of our mentors and gurus. World Teachers' Day is celebrated on October 5; however, it is observed on a different day in each nation. It is commemorated on September 5 in India to honor the contributions made by teachers to their students and society; it is the day when the former President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, was born. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a prominent Indian academic, philosopher, and the former President of India.

Why September 5?

As soon as Dr. Radhakrishnan was appointed as the president, his students approached him and asked if they may celebrate his birthday throughout the country with him. He explained to his kids that it would make him feel better if they celebrated his birthday as Teacher's Day instead of his actual birthday. Teacher's Day is being observed on September 5 since 1962.

Dr. Radhakrishnan's professional accomplishments:

Dr. Radhakrishnan was born in a poor Brahmin family in Tiruttani, Andhra Pradesh, but excelled in school and completed his education through scholarships. He was a brilliant scholar and philosopher who served as India's first Vice President and second President. He earned a Master's degree in philosophy. He published 'The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore' in 1917, establishing Indian philosophy on the global stage. Then he was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Andhra University from 1931 to 1936 and later on as the Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University in 1939. In 1931, he was knighted, and in 1954, he was granted the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor. In 1963, he was appointed as an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit.

Celebrations on Teachers' Day:

For children at school, teachers' day means to get flowers, chocolates and hand-made cards to express their respect and love. Senior students celebrate this day by dressing up like their teachers and performing on stage. Students perform dances, songs and recitals of poems. Teachers are welcomed to the auditorium, where they are able to see the performances live. In some of the activities organized on Teachers' Day, certain teachers are invited up to the stage to participate in them.

But, schools and institutions have been closed due to Covid-19, and yearly school celebrations have been substituted with virtual ones. Therefore, virtual greetings are an excellent opportunity to tell your teachers that you respect and value them, even if you are no longer a school/college-going student, because teachers are the foundation upon which any high-quality education is constructed. They are among the few individuals in our life who express happiness when we, their students, outperform them.

Thankyou for making us what we are today, a very HAPPY TEACHERS' DAY!
