What is Urine Test? What Does it Check?

To detect problem in the urinary tract or kidney, the doctor prescribes you UA. When you show up symptoms like pain at the back, pain in the belly, frequent peeing, blood in the urine, the doctor will ask to do the test

Urine test is that test which checks level of glucose, protein, blood and bacteria. If the test
result is not normal, it may suggest diabetes, bladder or kidney infection or a problem like
preeclampsia. But, all these conditions may be treated. This test will however never tell you anything about the health of the baby. As the name suggests, urine is collected to carry out the test. A series of checks are made on the pee of the person to detect the medical condition. It is prescribed by a doctor only when he suspects some kind of medical condition. Uric acid test is unlike urinalysis where the blood is collected to detect the percentage of uric acid in the blood. Urinalysis may form the part of usual checkups. If the test is done at the earliest, diseases like liver disease, kidney disease or diabetes may be detected sooner. This test is also needed when you are going to have surgery soon. Then, it may also form the part of pregnancy analysis.

When will the doctor prescribe you urine test?

To detect problem in the urinary tract or kidney, the doctor prescribes you UA. When you show up symptoms like pain at the back, pain in the belly, frequent peeing, blood in the urine, the doctor will ask to do the test. Anyone having kidney disease needs to undergo this test on a regular basis. The test report can say a lot about how far the treatment is working or fairing.

How is the UA done?

Urinalysis is done in three different levels. The lab professional can perform visual examination whereby he sees the clarity and color of the urine. If there is any trace of blood, the color will be dark brown or red. To show that there is kidney disease, the urine might have foam. Cloudy urine suggests any infection. The lab professional carries out microscopic examination of the urine to detect any such sign. What shouldn’t be there in the urine under the microscope are Red Blood Cells, White Blood Cells, Crystals and Bacteria. Then, the third level of test on urine is done with the use of chemical-treated thin plastic strip. The chemical in the plastic strip reacts with the urine to change its color. If there is change in color of the urine or if the stick reacts to the urine, it implies acidic urine suggesting kidney ailment. Any of the following occurrences is the sign of disease:

 When protein is found to be more, it implies that kidneys are not efficient. The function
of kidney is to eliminate waste from the body. Higher protein suggests kidney is not
working.
 high sugar content suggests diabetes
 White blood cell is the symptom of some infection
 Red Blood Cells in the urine means some sort of illness or infection

 Bilirubin in the urine implies that liver is not functioning efficiently

So, you can understand how many things urinalysis can speak about your health. CBC test and UA may be prescribed together. Complete Blood Count test is done to count RBC, WBC, Platelets and Plasma in the blood.

A New Tool May Aid Patients To Detect Urine Blockage

Surgeons are developing a new smartphone-based tool that can detect urethral or urine blockage, potentially making it easier for patients to test themselves for the condition from the comfort of their own homes.

The novel technique could take high-speed photography which could capture subtle differences between a normal steady stream of liquid and a stream of liquid with an obstruction.

Urethral strictures are a slowing or blocking of the natural flow of urine due to an injury or infection. It is normally diagnosed by uroflowmetry, a test administered at a physician’s office.

“The problem is that patient follow-up after we treat this condition is very poor,” said Matthew Gretzer, Associate Professor at the University of Arizona in the US.

“But we need patients to come back to our clinic for a uroflow test to determine if the obstruction is still present,” he added.

In order to test Gretzer’s hypothesis on high-speed photography, the team created a model of a urethral structure using tubing hooked to a saline bag that could drain through.

Saline fluid was passed through the tubing with and without blockages, created using 3D printed strictures, placed within the tubing. High-speed photography captured both the regular and blocked stream of liquid exiting the tube.

Gretzer contended that photos can be a medium to diagnose blockages and he hopes that patients could send him these images to analyse and make the diagnosis. He plans to create a mobile app which can be downloaded by the patients.

“All patients would need to do is take high-speed images of their urine flow using a strobe light,” Gretzer said.

“Strobe light apps are readily available right now for people to use on their phones”.

According to the researchers, as fluid exits an opening, a natural breakpoint occurs where the liquid stream forms droplets, but with obstructions in place, it changes.

The results showed that by analysing photos, they could measure the length to this point of droplet formation. This length then directly related to the presence of an obstruction in the tube. (IANS)
