Know More About the Hindu Samrajya Diwas celebrated on June 4

Each year India celebrates June 4 as Hindu Samrajya Diwas to mark the coronation anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Hindu kingdom came into being with Shivaji's coronation, it's here when the strongholds of a Hindu Samrajya were built. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was the famous 17th-century ruler who founded the Maratha Kingdom.

June 4 is also celebrated as 'Shiva Statehood Festival' in Maharashtra. The tales of valor, victory and sacrifice of Shivaji Maharaj still resides in the heart of every Indian. His tales continue to be orated to children all across India as he is considered courageous Hindu Maharaja.

The Maratha King, Shivaji Maharaj was coronated in a grand ceremony at the Raigad Fort which is situated at a height of five thousand feet in the Raigad District of Maharashtra. People in Raigad and across Maharashtra celebrate the day on the Hindu month Jyeshtha's Shukla Trayodashi (13th day) which falls on June 4.

History has told that Shivaji Maharaj took an oath to establish Haindava Swaraj when he was only a teenager. His stories about the fight against Mughals where he fought with courage and held his ground, conquering the forts is an adrenaline rush to every proud Indian.

Legends have it that the mighty king was coronated with the sacred waters of seven rivers including Yamuna, Indus, Ganges, Godavari, Narmada, Krishna, and Kaveri. His grand coronation ceremony attended by nearly fifty thousand people at the Raigad Fort. Shivaji was adorned with the title Shakakarta meaning founder of an era and Chhatrapati meaning paramount sovereign. He also took the title of Haindava Dharmodhhaarak which means the protector of the Hindu faith.

Over the course of his life, Shivaji engaged in both alliances and hostilities with the Mughal Empire, the Sultanate of Golkonda, and the Sultanate of Bijapur, as well as with various European colonial powers. Shivaji's strong military forces expanded the Maratha sphere of influence, capturing and building forts, and forming a strong Maratha navy which was a symbol of pride and success in those times. Shivaji established a very competent and progressive civil rule with well-structured administrative organizations. He revived ancient Hindu political traditions and court conventions and promoted the usage of Marathi and Sanskrit, rather than the Persian language, in court and administration, thus promoting Hindutva and the spirit of oneness among his citizens.

This day is of utmost importance to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and it is one of the six festivals they celebrate officially at the organizational level. This year however as the world is coping with the coronavirus pandemic and the economy is under lockdown and social distancing norms, RSS will mark it through thousands of online events, like talks, webinars, seminars on various digital platforms.
