CPI-M to draw action plan for local bodies’ polls in state committee meeting

Thiruvananthapuram: The two-day state committee meeting of the CPI (M) to draw up a plan of action for local bodies' polls in November began on Friday, in which senior party leader V.S. Achuthanandan was also present.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) — which appears in tatters ever since its shock defeat in the Aruvikara by-election — seems to have fallen back on its most senior leader in the state to make a political comeback.

Ever since he staged an unceremonious walkout from a state party conference early this year at Alappuzha, Achuthanandan' name was struck off the rolls of the powerful CPI-M state committee. At the last party congress, the opposition leader was relegated to the status of an invitee to the central committee of the CPI-M.

Even as the CPI-M state unit has asked its national leadership to reign in the 91- year-old veteran and a politburo commission has been set up to look into Achuthanandan's actions, he got a call from CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Thursday evening, asking him to attend the two-day state committee meeting.
