Indian doctor couple found guilty of fraud in US

An Indian-origin doctor couple has been found guilty of a health care fraud worth $2.5 in Maryland, United States.

The couple, Paramjit Singh Ajrawat, 60 and his wife Sukhveen Kaur Ajrawat, 57 were convicted by a federal jury for being involved in a scheme to defraud federal health benefit programs, including Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE. Paramjit is a licenced physician in Maryland who specializes in interventional pain management, while his wife is a psychiatrist. They are also one of the prominent Khalistani leaders of USA.

According to prosecutors, the Ajrawats swindled the US government out of at least $2.5 million. The couple was also found accountable for wire fraud, obstruction of justice and aggravated identity theft, according to a Washington news website, CBS Local.

Prosecutors said that the Ajrawats filed claims for procedures that were either not performed at their pain management clinic or were less expensive.

The US authorities indicted Ajrawats in June 2014 and they may face a maximum of 10 years in prison. The sentencing is due for February 1 next year.
