Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Citing Health Concerns

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his position as the 14th Vice President of India on Monday, July 21, 2025, citing health concerns. The 74-year-old submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, effective immediately, under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution.

Dhankhar, who assumed office on August 11, 2022, after securing 528 out of 725 valid votes in the vice-presidential election on August 6, 2022, against opposition candidate Margaret Alva, announced his decision in a letter. “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately,” he wrote, thanking President Murmu for her “unwavering support” and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “invaluable cooperation.”

He expressed pride in India’s economic progress and global rise during his tenure, which began after his term as Governor of West Bengal from July 30, 2019, to July 17, 2022. The resignation, announced on the first day of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session 2025, leaves the Vice President’s post vacant, with Harivansh Narayan Singh, Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha since August 2022, stepping in as Acting Chairperson.
