National Youth Day: Swami Vivekananda’s message to Youth

Nithin Sridhar

Swami Vivekananda was one of the tallest person the world has ever seen in the last few centuries. He was a monk, a patriot, an excellent orator, and a lifelong Karmayogi, who dedicated each and every second of his adult life for the sake of country, its people, and Sanatana Dharma.

His life’s mission was to see India and its people rise and reclaim its past glory. His work aimed at uplifting the poor and establishing of Dharma. His call for action, his call for strength and renouncement of weakness not only led the foundation for India’s freedom struggle, but also showed the path which Indians must travel to attain progress and well-being.

Today is 153rd birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda and the whole country rightly celebrates it as National Youth India. Swami Vivekananda firmly believed that the nation’s youth held the key for solving various problems facing India. He repeatedly gave the call for the youths to awake, arise, and work for the nation and its people.

Here are the twelve quotes that summarizes Swami Vivekananda’s message for the Youth.

“I have faith in my country, and especially in the youth of my country. My hope is in you. With an immense amount of feeling and enthusiasm in the blood, will come heroes who will march from one corner of the earth to the other, preaching and teaching the eternal spiritual truths of our forefathers.”

“What I want is muscles of iron and nerves of steel, inside which dwells a mind of same material as that of which the thunderbolt is made.”

“Now for that, I want young men. “It is the young, the strong, and healthy, of sharp intellect that will reach the Lord”, say the Vedas. This is the time to decide your future — while you possess the energy of youth, not when you are worn out and jaded, but in the freshness and vigour of youth. Work — this is the time; for the freshest, the untouched, and unsmelled flowers alone are to be laid at the feet of the Lord, and such He receives. Rouse yourselves, therefore, or life is short.”

“And here is the test of truth — anything that makes you weak physically, intellectually, and spiritually, reject as poison; there is no life in it, it cannot be true. Truth is strengthening. Truth is purity, truth is all-knowledge; truth must be strengthening, must be enlightening, must be invigorating.”

“First of all, our young men must be strong. Religion will come afterwards. Be strong, my young friends; that is my advice to you. You will be nearer to heaven through football than through the study of the Gita. These are bold words; but I have to say them, for I love you…You will understand the Gita better with your biceps, your muscles, a little stronger. You will understand the mighty genius and the mighty strength of Krishna better with a little of strong blood in you.”

“Where are the men? That is the question. … Will you respond to the call of your nation? Each one of you has a glorious future if you dare believe me. Have a tremendous faith in yourselves, like the faith I had when I was a child, and which I am working out now. Have that faith, each one of you, in yourself — that eternal power is lodged in every soul — and you will revive the whole of India.”

“All power is within you; you can do anything and everything. Believe in that, do not believe that you are weak; do not believe that you are half-crazy lunatics, as most of us do nowadays. You can do anything and everything, without even the guidance of any one. Stand up and express the divinity within you.”

“There are greater works to be done than aspiring to become lawyers and picking quarrels and such things. A far greater work is this sacrifice of yourselves for the benefit of your race, for the welfare of humanity. What is in this life? … Life is short, but the soul is immortal and eternal, and one thing being certain, death, let us therefore take up a great ideal and give up our whole life to it.”

“A hundred thousand men and women, fired with the zeal of holiness, fortified with eternal faith in the Lord, and nerved to lion’s courage by their sympathy for the poor and the fallen and the downtrodden, will go over the length and the breadth of the land, preaching the gospel of salvation, the gospel of help, the gospel of social raising-up–the gospel of equality.”

“Practice virtue, persevere in virtue. Become established in virtue. Shine as an embodiment of noblest virtue and heroic adherence to goodness. Youth is meant for this grand process. Youth life is the active development and fulfillment of these processes.”
