Kap’s Café, a newly launched restaurant in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, owned by Indian comedian and actor Kapil Sharma, was attacked on July 10, 2025, Wednesday night . According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the property and nearby buildings were targeted in a gunfire assault, during which at least eight shots were fired at around 1:50 a.m.
The incident occurred at the café, located in the 8400 block of 120 Street, on the border of Surrey and North Delta. Police responded promptly, and according to a news release by Surrey Police, shots were fired at the business while staff members were still inside, although no injuries were reported.
Police recovered bullet casings from the scene and have begun scanning CCTV footage for clues. The Surrey Police Service Frontline Investigative Support (FLIS) Team is leading the investigation. Though the motive remains undetermined, police are examining possible connections to a series of extortion-related incidents that have been targeting South Asian business owners in the region. As of now, there is no suspect information to share, according to Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton.
The attack was claimed by Harjit Singh Laddi, a wanted Khalistani terrorist affiliated with the banned Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). Laddi reportedly took responsibility in a social media post, stating that the attack was in retaliation for remarks allegedly made by Kapil Sharma about Nihang Sikhs. Laddi, one of India’s most wanted fugitives according to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), was joined in the claim by Toofan Singh, another BKI operative.
This incident appears to be part of a larger pattern of extortion-linked violence that has been growing across Canada. The RCMP has been investigating an extortion racket network since late 2023, in coordination with provincial, national, and international agencies.
Many victims, primarily South Asian business owners, have reported receiving threats demanding large sums of money. When these demands were refused, they were often followed by property damage or violent attacks—a trend that raises serious concerns about the safety of immigrant entrepreneurs in the country.

Kapil Sharma and his wife, Ginni Chatrath, had only recently launched Kap’s Café in Surrey. Opened just last weekend, the café quickly became popular among the Indian diaspora, drawing warm support from fans and local residents alike.
The 44-year-old comedian shared a video online thanking patrons for their enthusiastic response and heartfelt shoutouts to the new venture. The overwhelming appreciation highlighted the strong connection Sharma shares with his global audience.
However, this celebratory mood was abruptly shattered when a shocking video surfaced showing unidentified assailants firing multiple gunshots at the café. Although no injuries were reported, the attack has deeply alarmed the local community, especially South Asian business owners, who are increasingly grappling with threats, extortion attempts, and targeted violence.
