Delhi witnessed a tragic incident on 15 August 2025, when a dargah roof collapsed near the Humayun’s Tomb complex in Nizamuddin, killing six people, including an 80-year-old man, and injuring several others.
The roof of Dargah Sharif Patte Shah, located next to the 16th-century Mughal-era monument, caved in around 3:30 pm on Friday. At least 12 people were rescued, of whom nine were admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Five of them later died during treatment.
Another victim was admitted to LNJP Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, while a woman remains under treatment at RML Hospital, police officials confirmed.
Delhi Fire Services identified the deceased as including Swaroop Chand (79). The injured were named as Md Shameem, Aryan, Gudiya, Rafat Parveen, and Rani (65).
Eyewitness Vishal Kumar, who works at Humayun’s Tomb, said, “When we heard the noise, my supervisor came running. We called for people and the administration. Slowly, we took out the people who were trapped.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari stated, “After the collapse, 12 people, most of whom were visitors, were rescued from under the debris. Nine of them were admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where five died. A man was admitted to the LNJP Hospital, while a woman was admitted to the RML Hospital.”
He added that SHO and local police staff reached the site within five minutes and began the rescue operation. Fire personnel, CATS ambulances, and later the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) joined the efforts.
Police have registered a case under sections 290 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down, repairing or constructing buildings), 125 (acts that endanger human life or personal safety), and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons. Civic agencies have also been informed for further investigation.
Reacting to the tragedy, Delhi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) President Saurabh Bhardwaj criticised the authorities, saying, “Our only request to the administration is to do their job properly... We are telling the government that mere words won't help, the Chief Minister needs to take action on the ground.” [Rh/Eth/VS]
