Malaika reveals the world only sees her brave face, not her struggles.
Actress and dancer Malaika Arora recently opened up about being called “buddhiya” in an interview with Pinkvilla. Malaika has long been a champion of body positivity and an active supporter of self-love. However, she expressed her feelings about being trolled on the internet for her age and appearance.
Malaika Arora reacts to being age-shamed by trolls, saying that while she usually ignores negative comments made anonymously behind screens, sometimes the trolling affects her deeply. Speaking about the age-shaming, she said, “For me, ‘buddhiya’… I mean, how can you even say something like that to somebody? Kabhi kabhi ye trigger karta hai, because bahut hi insensitive hai. (Sometimes the label triggers me because it is really insensitive).”
She further revealed that the outside world only sees the brave face she puts on for people. “They see only that persona. They will see ‘khush lag rahi hai’ (she looks happy), but they don’t realize that there are so many things that can actually trigger you and upset you,” she explained.
The 51-year-old actress admitted that trolling is often very triggering for her. She faced immense criticism when she began dating actor Arjun Kapoor, who is younger than her. In 2021, she spoke about their relationship in an interview, saying that age difference should not matter in love.

According to Malaika, “It is about two minds and hearts connecting. Unfortunately, we live in a society that refuses to progress with time.” She condemned the double standards in society where people applaud older men dating younger women, but call women in similar relationships “desperate” or “buddhi.”
In her recent conversation with Pinkvilla, Malaika emphasized that online hate should not be taken seriously. She said such negativity should be turned into motivation: “People, go ahead and say what you want to say, I will be better than that. I will prove to you that I can be better and I can probably do anything and everything under the sun.”
Malaika also shared that her son, Arhaan Khan, is a pillar of strength for her. “He is always like, ‘What is the big deal, Mom? If somebody is saying that, it’s fine. Why are you letting it affect you or upset you?’” She added that his encouragement helps her reset her mindset and move forward positively. “Uske baad mere khud ke dimaag me jo mechanism hai to deal with situations (After that, the mechanism in my mind to deal with such situations) kicks in and then I say to myself, ‘Let’s move forward, put this behind me."
