Government to launch series of environmental stamps

New Delhi: A series of environmental stamps depicting the entire environmental profile of the country would be launched soon, Communications Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Thursday.

Speaking at the release of a commemorative stamp to mark the centenary year of Zoological Survey of India here, he said that the Department of Posts will bring out stamps for daily use and has already brought out a series of stamps on flora and fauna, classical musicians, revolutionaries of India, an official statement said.

Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Prakash Javadekar, who was also present, urged scientists of Zoological Survey to reach out to the students to motivate them and create more interest among them in basic sciences.

"Basic and fundamental sciences are important and lead to newer research," he said.

The ministers had also released publications of Zoological Survey of India – the "Centenary Souvenir", the "Centenary Directory" and "A Glorious 100".

Recently concluded Paris climate talks had the issue where the need of more sensitivity towards the environment and climate was felt. The environmental Stamps are a way to spread the awareness in the country.

Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), the premier institute on animal taxonomy in India, was established on 1st July 1916 to promote the survey, exploration, research and documentation leading to the advancement in our knowledge on various aspects of the animal taxonomy of the Indian subcontinent.
