Indian Firm takes over Construction of Hindu Temple of Goddess Durga in Bhutan

Thimphu, Jul 01, 2017: The construction of a long-delayed temple of goddess Durga has been taken over by a renowned Indian infrastructure firm in Bhutan, post the project being hit by the imperfections in the design and conflicts among members of the Hindu-body that governs the temple.

Kuensel Online has reported that the construction of this temple at Kuensel Phodrang in Thimphu started in 2012 and was scheduled to be wrapped up by 2014, but the project got delayed due to the flaws in its drafted design and severe disagreement among the members of the Hindu Dharma Samudaya of Bhutan.

Jaiprakash Associates Limited (JAL) has presently taken over the construction-work following an order from the government, and it will be completed by June 2018, it has been reported.

According to the PTI reports, post the termination of the previous contract of the temple, JAL was handed over the work to improve the draft-design of the architecture of the temple.

JAL had volunteered to further the construction work of the temple with its own funding,Press Trust of India has reported.
JAL deputy general manager and civil engineer Ajay Pant was quoted as saying, "Work is in full swing and going on smoothly. The company will spend about Nu 40M for the construction."

Idols of Gods or Goddesses in Hindu temples must be carved and crafted on the stone, he said.

Presently the plan is to bring the idols and other materials regarding the temple construction from Chennai, he stated. The major idol of the temple is to be goddess Durga.
The temple is to be built with a major shrine, a hall of prayer and a library for the celebration of Durga puja, Press Trust of India has reported.

Other factors causing the delay in the process includes the process of tender awarding, import of the raw materials, a delay in budget release and complaints regarding the poor quality of construction and the idols also led to the delay of the project, Press Trust of India has reported.
J N Sharma, the HDSBs project manager, stated that the HDSB had already built the major block, living-quarters for the caretaker and the priest, the toilets and purchased about 10 fiberglass idols.

The government had allocated Nu 65M for the construction-work of the temple. When completed, JAL will hand over the temple work to the HDSB.
