How Cruel Can Humans be Towards Animals?

By Muskan Bhatnagar

The world is said to be home to 8.7 million animal species including 6.5 million species on land and 2.2 million in water bodies. These days, animals are being abused by humans in every aspect. Shameful, violent, and shocking incidents of animal cruelty are coming out.

Talking about a recent case of animal cruelty that came to light in India, a 15-year-old elephant who was 2 months pregnant died after eating a pineapple filled with firecrackers.
The pineapple exploded in her mouth when she chomped on it and injured her jaw. The elephant passed away standing in the waters of the Velliyar River in Kerala. The case is a brutal killing of the elephant and her baby as the cracker filled pineapple was fed to her by an anonymous man from the village.

Pineapples filled with crackers are usually used by local people to protect their fields against wild boars or wild pigs. The elephant became a victim of one of these pineapples. But this is not and can never be a justification to this act of cruelty. After all, boars are also animals who have to face the same repercussions. Humanity couldn't have fallen any lower than this.

Humans have shown their cruelty towards animals on a large scale and the most commonly abused animals are dogs, cats, horses, and livestock. These are the domestic animals that humans abuse. But what about the animals who are killed in uncountable numbers just so that humans can fill their stomachs and wear good looking clothes?

When billions of animals are slaughtered and processed every year just for the sake of our fashion, lifestyle, and food, why does that go unnoticed?

Leather, silk, fur, wool, and whatnot are made up of animal skin. Animals are kept in unimaginably horrific and harsh conditions all their lives, treated like nothing, and killed for money and products. These animals lead a short life of hell on earth, and I'm pretty sure that they're thankful that their lives are brief in such miserably torturing conditions. Millions of animals are trapped for the making of clothes every year and we tend to overlook and continue using clothes and accessories made up of animal skin.

And what on earth can humans do to justify the killing of animals for food? If you are a non-veg lover then do you think that killing of animals is right? Or is it wrong? And if you find it wrong, can you give up on your favorite animal food products? Or does this article suddenly feels personally attacking to you?

Above 200 million animals are killed for food every day worldwide and that's only on land. Including wild-caught and farmed fishes, a total of nearly 3 billion animals get killed every day. Which comes to 72 billion land animals and more than 1.2 trillion aquatic animals killed for human consumption around the world every year.

And the killing of these animals is a terrible process. They're slaughtered with barely any mercy and in the cruelest possible way. Do you think the human race can't survive without the consumption of animals? No. We can survive without eating animal food, after all, animal agriculture is an environmentally destructive industry. And if you love animal food and the idea of killing of these animals never came to your mind, or you've justified it by saying that you are not the person who slaughters them, then just try giving a thought of how cruel humanity has been on animals.

Animals make the earth a better place to live and don't deserve any of those cruel human actions against them. Calling someone an animal is no more a curse word to me, as clearly humans are the actual "animals " causing destruction.
