The calcutta high court, giving ruling on a 6 years long divorce battle between Md. Shami and his estranged wife Hasan Jahan have ordered Md. Shami to pay 4 lakh per month on Jul 3, 2025. Shami, a renowned Indian International cricketer, is a right-arm fast bowler for the Indian national team. He has proven to be a significant asset for Team India, but he is currently on a break due to health concerns. Despite his professional success, he is facing significant personal setbacks due to an ongoing divorce case with his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan.
The court ruled that Shami must pay ₹1.5 lakh per month to Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh per month for the maintenance of his daughter.
Shami and former model Hasin Jahan got married in 2014. The couple had their daughter in 2015 but separated in 2018. Jahan accused Shami of domestic violence and adultery and filed for divorce. Since then, the two have been engaged in a prolonged legal battle of almost 6-years over alimony and other related matters.
Hasin Jahan to the court order said that "The way he leads his lifestyle, ₹4 lakh is less. We demanded ₹10 lakh four years ago. The cost of living has increased now. And we will demand it again. This judgment is a big win for me. I'm thankful to Imtiaz bhai (Jahan's advocate) and the Hon'ble Judge of the High Court.”
Hasin Jahan, before marrying Shami, was a model and a cheerleader for the Kolkata Knight Riders. She claimed that Shami forced her to quit her profession and wanted her to live as a housewife. She said she accepted this willingly because she loved him deeply. However, she now has no independent source of income and requires Shami to support her and their daughter. After he allegedly refused, she was compelled to seek legal recourse.
“Thank God there is a law in our country which orders people to bear their responsibilities.” she said.
She also said, “If you are entering a relationship with someone, it is not written on their face that they have a poor character, are a criminal, or will play with your and your daughter's future. I too became a victim like this. God has forgiven the biggest criminals. He cannot see the protection, future, and happiness of his daughter. He should also give up his stubbornness of wanting to ruin Hasin Jahan's life. He cannot destroy me because I am on the path of justice, while he is on the path of injustice.”
After the Calcutta High Court delivered its verdict in the divorce case, Jahan’s advocate, Imtiaz Ahmed, said:
“It was the best moment for Hasin Jahan. From 2018 to 2024, she had been running from pillar to post. Ultimately, it was pronounced in open court yesterday that ₹1.5 lakh would be provided to Hasin Jahan, ₹2.5 lakh for the daughter (both to be paid monthly), and that any time the daughter requires assistance, it would be provided by Md Shami.”
He also mentioned, “The High Court has directed the trial court to dispose of the main application related to the interim order within six months. There is a high chance that when they return to the trial court to conclude the hearing on maintenance, the amount might be upgraded to ₹6 lakh, because Hasin Jahan's original claim in her maintenance application was ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for her daughter.”
The legal battle has drawn public attention, especially after Shami’s emotional 2023 Instagram post about meeting Aaira after a long separation — a post that Jahan dismissed as a publicity stunt, alleging that he had refused to sign their daughter’s passport renewal. Shami has mostly remained silent about the case in public. For now, he is legally required to pay ₹4 lakh every month, though the final maintenance amount will be decided after the trial court hearing. [Rh/VP]
