Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), a subsidiary of Coal India will set up a 50 megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Odisha's Sambalpur at a total cost of Rs 301.92 crore, moving steadily towards its goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2024. MCL has placed a turnkey order to set-up a 50 MW solar power plant with a Chennai-based firm M/s Hild Energy Ltd, which will establish this green energy project within a timeline of 10 months, the MCL said in a statement on Saturday.
This solar plant would cater to the captive power requirement of MCL. The Central PSU had successfully set-up a 2MW solar power plant in Sambalpur in 2014. The company said it has pledged a target of installing 182 MW of solar power by 2024 in order to become a net zero energy company, aligning itself to use cleaner forms of energy for coal production.

This 50 MW solar power project will reduce CO2 emission by 91,020 tonnes per annum and carbon offsets of around 24,824 tonnes per annum, claimed the MCL. MCL is the leading production subsidiary of Coal India, having mining operations in Angul, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh districts of Odisha. Having achieved the highest ever capital expenditure of Rs 2,419 crore in the financial year 2020-21, the company has coal production and dispatch targets of 163 million tonnes and 182 million tonnes, respectively.
MCL was the coal mining company to introduce environment-friendly surface miner technology, which contributes over 95 per cent in coal production. As another environment-friendly initiative, the company has successfully introduced vertical rippers for blast-less over-burden removal in Hingula and Kaniha opencast projects. (IANS/ MBI)

In an attempt to bring even small farmers under its solarisation drive, the government has allowed the use of pastureland and marshy land for the development of grid-connected solar power plants.
The ministry of new and renewable energy had amended guidelines of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyaan (PM-KUSUM) Scheme is expanding its scope to include new areas for setting up of solar power plants in rural agricultural areas.

The scheme so far allowed power plants only on barren, fallow, and agricultural land. But with the changes, solar power plants can now also be installed on pastureland and marshy land of farmers.
Changes have also been made to the size of the power plant so that it makes it easier even for small farmers to invest in power generation. Accordingly, the solar power projects smaller than 500 kW can now be permitted by States based on techno-commercial feasibility.

Also, the selected Renewable Power Generator (RPG) has been given more time to commission the project with the deadline for completion being extended by three months to 12 months from the date of issuance of the Letter of Award (LoA). Moreover, no penalty will be levied on RPG for the shortfall in solar power generation from the minimum prescribed Capacity Utilization Factor (CUF).
“The changes would allow better participation of farmers in the government’s renewable power initiatives and help in expanding the reach of green power to remotest corners of the country,” said an official source not willing to be named. (IANS)
As many as 1,210 solar pumps for irrigation have been installed across Himachal Pradesh to meet a five-year target of installing 5,850 pumps, said officials on Sunday. For this, the state has allocated a budgetary provision of Rs 200 crore.
At present, 1,189.71 hectares have been brought under the solar scheme benefiting 2,066 farmers, a government statement added.

Kangra tops among the 15 districts with the installation of 570 solar pumps, followed by Mandi 406, Una 268, Shimla 165, Chamba 144, Hamirpur 131, Sirmaur 108, Kullu 73, Lahaul-Spit 71, Bilaspur 66, Solan 51, and Kinnaur 13.
Under the Solar Irrigation scheme, infrastructure is being established to lift water by the solar pumps. 90 percent of assistance is being provided to small and marginal farmers for individually installing pumping machinery. A provision of 80 percent assistance is also made for middle or big farmers.

However, for the installation of pumping machinery at the community level, 100 percent expenditure is being borne by the government for farmers of all categories.
The Centre’s ‘Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan’ (PM-KUSUM) scheme has been implemented in the state to provide irrigation facility to the farmers, enabling them to grow more cash crops for increasing their income.

The scheme aims at providing reliable irrigation facilities to the farmers, especially in remote areas where there is no availability of electricity to lift water for irrigation.
Under this scheme, a provision of 85 percent financial assistance for pumping machinery has been made for setting up solar pumps at individual and community levels by the farmers.
In the current fiscal Rs, 12 crores have been earmarked for the project. A target of setting up 1,000 solar pumps for this year will be met, with 50 percent expenditure borne by the Centre and 35 percent by the state. 15 percent would be borne by the beneficiary.
More than 80 percent of horticultural and agricultural activities in the hill state is rain-fed. (IANS)
