11 killed, 219 injured in fire at Saudi residential complex

Riyadh: A massive fire broke out in a residential complex of the Saudi Aramco oil company in Saudi Arabia’s Al Khobar city on Sunday, in which at least 11 were killed and 219 injured.

saudi fireCivil Defence spokesman Ali al Qahtani said on Twitter that some of the injured are in critical condition and that the victims were of various nationalities and worked for the Saudi Aramco oil giant.

The complex is home to employees of the oil giant. An investigation has been launched into the incident. Civil defence authorities said the fire started in the basement of a tower in the complex.

Saudi Aramco is the world’s largest oil firm in terms of crude production and exports. It has more than 61,000 workers worldwide from 77 countries.

Foreigners make up about a third of Saudi Arabia’s population of 30.8 million.

Saudi Arabia has granted 2.664 million visas for pilgrims to perform Umrah this year, a 2.79 per cent up over the corresponding period last year, according to official statistics released on Friday.

Up till now, 2.250 million pilgrims have entered the kingdom to perform Umrah, a growth of 3.47 per cent over the same period last year, the Saudi Ministry of Haj and Umrah said.

Up to 1.9 million pilgrims have already performed Umrah to date and left the Kingdom, an increase of 3.05 per cent over the same period.
