Caserta, Sep 20 2016. A 61-year-old Italian woman only identifies as V.M. gave birth to a healthy 3.5 kg baby boy who is named Elais at a hospital in Caserta, near Naples, media reports said on Tuesday.

Doctors announced the birth of the baby boy, saying his mother had "realised a dream". "Mum and baby are well and she is over the moon," the doctors added.

The woman told doctors she had become pregnant with Elias after undergoing hormone therapy.

The current, verified record of the world's oldest mother is held by Maria del Carmen Bousada Lara, who was 66 when she gave birth to twin boys in Barcelona, Spain, in 2006.

An Indian woman, Daljinder Kaur, who claims to be 72, gave birth to a healthy boy — her first child — in April 2016 at the National Fertility Centre in Haryana state.

Kaur underwent three rounds of in-vitro fertilisation treatment using anonymous donor eggs and gave birth by caesarian section on April 19 this year. (IANS)
