Modi government is trying its best to get the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill passed in this session of Parliament. Nine new amendments have been proposed to remove any hindrance to the passing of the Bill.

The amendments relate to restricting acquisition of land within one km of both sides of railway tracks and highways, providing employment to at least one member of affected family and creating a bank of barren land, sources said. Amendments also talk of government ensuring that the land acquired would be the minimum required for a project.

The amendments to the Bill are likely to be moved by the Development Minister Birender Singh in the Lok Sabha. The opposition members in Lok Sabha have demanded that the bill should be sent to a standing committee.

The government has also proposed to delete the provision which required prior government sanction for a court to take cognizance of an offence under relevant section of Code of Criminal Procedure.

The Bill, as of now, is stuck in a deadlock with the opposition uniting against it and NDA lacking a majority in Rajya Sabha.
