Prisoner release: Mufti mellows his stance after PM Modi throws his weight around

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's verbal drubbing on the issue of the release of separatist leaders in Kashmir, PDP has told BJP that it will not release any more political prisoners without consulting their alliance partners.

Although the question of Masarat Alam`s re-arrest was raised by BJP, PDP has not approved it saying that the decision of his release was taken before Mufti`s swearing in as the Chief Minister. The party is also against filing fresh charges against the main accused in stone pelting incidents in 2008 and 2010.

According to sources, Mufti called Home Minister Rajnath Singh and assured him that any such developments from now on will follow proper procedure.

J&K Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed's decision to release all political prisoners who are not facing criminal charges had drawn bitter criticism from all over the country and seriously endangered the newly formed fragile coalition government in J&K.
