New Delhi: Modi government is likely to unilaterally announce a "new deal" for the protesting war veterans within next few days.

The government's likely announcement appears to be aimed at avoiding the moral code of conduct for Bihar assembly elections that may be announced by the election commission any time next week, according to a Times of India report.

Meanwhile, the One Rank One Pension (OROP) logjam between the veterans and the government continues. Though, most of the differences regarding the issue of the base year and the date of rollout appears to have been resolved, the issue of periodic revision of pension is yet far from being resolved.

The veterans are demanding an annual revision of pension which the government has rejected as being non-feasible. The government has offered a revision of pension once in 5 years (as against the norm of 10 years), but the veterans have rejected it.

The TOI report has quoted Arun Jaitely as saying: "I have my own formula on what OROP means. Somebody else may have their own formula on OROP, but it has to be within reasonable and rational criteria. You can't have an OROP where pensions are revised every month or every year."

The demanded annual revision will not only put additional financial burden on the government every year, it is also likely to become a statistical nightmare if implemented.
