New Delhi: To avoid any confusion arising out of similar names or party symbols while voting, the Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced on Wednesday that the electronic voting machines (EVM) will carry photos of the candidates in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections.

The first phase of the five-stage poll is scheduled for October 12.

"This has been done to avoid confusion among voters to identify their candidates. In the last few elections, it was seen that there were so many candidates of the same name which created confusion among the voters.

"The matter was also taken to the Supreme Court. We believe that the voters should know and be able to identify their candidates. That's why we have decided to use photos on the EVMs," Zaidi said.

Bihar elections will be conducted in five phases starting October 12. The last phase of the polls will be held on November 5.
