Sharad Pawar not in favor of quota in promotions

New Delhi: While favouring the continuation of job quotas, NCP leader Sharad Pawar says reservation should be confined to the point of entry.

The Nationalist Congress Party leader made this observation in his just-released autobiography "On My Terms" (Speaking Tiger).

"While I am totally in favour of persisting with caste-based reservation in the job sector, I also feel that reservation should be restricted only to the entry level.

"Thus, inducting a candidate in service through a caste-based reservation quota is fine, but the quota system should have no place when it comes to giving promotions," he says in the book.

"All promotions must be given strictly on the basis of merit."

Hardik Patel in Gujarat held protests all over the state demanding the quota for the Patel community. Gujjars in Rajasthan have done such protests at multiple times.

In India, there is the quota on the basis of caste in government vacancies but there is the quota for promotions after coming into the job as well.(Inputs from IANS)
