Washington: The newly elected team of an Indian-origin people's body has called on the Indian diaspora to actively engage in India's development, saying there are lots of investment opportunities.

"With an investment and business friendly government in India, we see a lot opportunity for the Indian diaspora to invest and actively participate in India's development," said Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) president Niraj Baxi from the Silicon Valley.

Baxi was elected as new head in a recently held online poll in which 208 of a total of 223 international delegates from 21 countries cast their votes.

Other elected officers are Noel Lal (Sydney, Australia), executive vice president and Ram Gadhavi (New Jersey), vice president.

Dr Rajeev Mehta (US), Dr Pradip Sewoke (France), Suman Kapoor (New Zealand) and Rajidre Tiwari (The Netherland) were elected as international coordinators.

The election process was supervised by GOPIO Chairman Inder Singh who will continue in that position.

Formed in 1989 at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin, GOPIO has now reached most countries with a sizable Indian Diaspora population.
