National Geographic’s famous Afghan Girl Arrested in Pakistan on Corruption Charges

October 26, 2016: The famous Afghan Girl of National Geography, Sharbat Bibi arrested on corruption charges on Wednesday by Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Peshawar, according to the sources of Dawn newspaper.

Steve McCurry, a National Geographic photographer took a picture of Sharbat Bibi in 1984 at a refugee camp near Peshawar.

She gained a worldwide fame as the photograph was featured on the National Geography magazine cover, 1985 issue.

She became well- known as the 'Afghan Girl'. At that time, she was 12 years old approximately.

"National Geographic also made a short documentary about her life and called her the Mona Lisa of Afghan war", Dawn said.

On Wednesday, Bibi was arrested from her own residence for forging a Computerized National Identity Card, FIA sources informed Dawn.

She has Afghan and Pakistani nationality; both the ID cards have been recovered from her.

She remained anonymous for a pretty long time after her picture was featured on the cover of National Geographic. Eventually, she was located in 2002 by the magazine.
Only after her family allowed her to meet photographer McCurry, who took her picture 17 years earlier.

When he met her, he said, he immediately knew that he had found her again.

"Her eyes are as haunting now as they were then," he had said.
