Marking a significant milestone in India’s electric vehicle market, American EV giant Tesla officially opened its first showroom-cum-experience centre in the country on July 15, 2025, at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The debut not only signals Tesla’s long-anticipated entry into India but also sets the stage for sales of its flagship Model Y SUV.
Located at Unit G 1B, 2 North Avenue, Maker Maxity, BKC, a prestigious business district, the 4,000-square-foot facility has been leased by Tesla for ₹4 crore annually (₹35 lakh per month) on a five-year agreement. The space will serve as a luxury experience centre, allowing visitors to explore Tesla’s cutting-edge technology, features, and products. It is situated near Apple’s flagship store, reinforcing BKC’s growing status as a premium retail hub.
As of the launch, five units of the Tesla Model Y, imported from the company’s Shanghai factory, have arrived in Mumbai. Offered in Long Range RWD and AWD Dual Motor variants, the Model Y offers up to 574 km of range and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds. Though priced around ₹27.7 lakh ($31,988) internationally, India’s 70% import duty on EVs under $40,000 elevates the final cost to over ₹48 lakh, excluding GST and insurance.
Bookings for the Model Y opened the same day, with deliveries expected to begin in August. Tesla has received a trade certificate from Andheri RTO, enabling it to test, display, and sell vehicles legally in the country.
The Model 3, Tesla’s most affordable model, is also showcased at the Mumbai centre but will go on sale later in 2025. With a starting U.S. price of $29,990 (₹25.99 lakh) and a reduced 15% import duty under India’s new EV policy, its projected ex-showroom price is around ₹29.79 lakh, though final costs may exceed ₹40 lakh after taxes.
Tesla is expected to open its next experience centre in Delhi, followed by expansion into other metros. Industry analysts see India as a key growth market, especially with growing interest in high-end EVs. Notably, Mukesh Ambani and Prashant Ruia already have Teslas in their fleets, reflecting growing elite adoption.
