In a shocking breach of security, Congress MP Sudha Ramakrishnan was the victim of a chain-snatching incident during her morning walk in Delhi’s diplomatic enclave of Chanakyapuri on 4th August, 2025. The Mayiladuthurai Lok Sabha MP has lodged a formal complaint with Delhi Police and written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding swift action and questioning women’s safety even in high-security areas of the national capital.

The incident occurred between 6:15 am and 6:20 am near Gates 3 and 4 of the Polish Embassy. Ramakrishnan, who was accompanied by DMK Rajya Sabha MP Rajathi, recounted that a man wearing a full-face helmet approached them on a scooter from the opposite direction and suddenly snatched her gold chain, weighing over 4 sovereigns approximately 32 grams, before fleeing the scene.

“Since he was coming slowly in the wrong lane, I did not suspect he could be a chain-snatcher. As he pulled the chain from my neck, I sustained injuries, and my churidar was torn due to the impact. I somehow managed not to fall, and both of us shouted for help,” Ramakrishnan stated in her complaint.

The MP added that the brazen attack in an area known for its high security and diplomatic missions has left her “highly traumatised” and has raised serious concerns about women’s safety in the city.

Soon after the incident, the MPs spotted a Delhi Police mobile patrol vehicle and lodged an immediate complaint. The matter was later escalated to the jurisdictional police station, where a formal FIR was registered.

Senior Delhi police officers confirmed that multiple teams have been deployed to trace the accused. CCTV footage from the area is being scanned, and eyewitnesses are being questioned. Police officers are pursuing several leads to identify the suspect and recover the stolen chain.

In her letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, Ramakrishnan expressed shock over the incident, noting that Chanakyapuri—home to numerous embassies and government offices—was expected to be among the safest zones in the capital.

“If a woman cannot walk safely in this high-priority area of Delhi, where else can we feel safe and go about our routine without fearing for our lives and valuables?” she wrote. She urged the minister to ensure that the culprit is swiftly tracked down using the “umpteen CCTV cameras” installed in the vicinity and that her gold chain is recovered.

The incident has triggered a fresh debate over women’s safety in Delhi, particularly in areas considered highly secure. Lawmakers and citizens alike have questioned how such crimes can occur so close to diplomatic missions and under the surveillance of multiple security agencies.

The MP, who is currently residing at Tamil Nadu House for the past year, said that morning walks were part of her routine whenever time permitted.

Delhi Police has registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code related to theft and causing hurt. The investigation is ongoing, with police checking footage from nearby cameras and tracking possible escape routes of the accused. [Rh/Eth/VP]
