Railways up for major facelift; free WiFi, cash on delivery service for e-tickets in store

Indian Railways is planning major up-gradation which includes passenger friendly services like WiFi, escalators and cash on delivery e-tickets Minister of State for Railways, Manoj Sinha informed Lok Sabha today.

In a written reply to the House, the minister said that Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd. (IRCTC), has launched a cash on delivery (CoD) service for e-tickets. Under this service a customer can book an e-ticket online and opt for Cash on Delivery service or can online payment.

The customer can book tickets up to five days prior to the journey on www.bookmytrain.com

He aslo told the house that WiFi facility has been installed in seven stations and will soon be extended to 407 'A1' and 'A' stations across the country. The service will be free for users for the first 30 minutes and then will cost Rs.25 for 30 minutes and Rs.35 for 1 Hour and will be valid for 24 hours.

He said that the facility has been enabled at Bengaluru, New Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Agra Cantt., Varanasi and Secunderabad stations.

Keeping in view the comfort of travelers, Sinha said that escalators/elevators will be provided at 'A1' category and escalators at 'A' category, 'C' category and stations of tourist importance under desirable amenities based on techno commercial feasibility & availability of fund.

Indian Railways has already set up a total number of 244 escalators at 96 railway stations and 101 lifts at 44 railway stations so far.
