Delhi will soon have a national institute which will aim at constructing universal designs that will make the lives of differently abled people better.

The National Institute for Inclusive and Universal Design (NIIUD) will concentrate on designing products, buildings, and softwares for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).

The officials in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment informed that Delhi was selected for convenience as it is the seat of several government institutions.

The sources revealed that the proposal for choosing Delhi to establish the institute would be sent for Cabinet approval. The institute would discover and design products to suit the necessities of the PwDs.

"For instance, a TV remote can be used by a normal human being (without any difficulty). But, how to make the device convenient for the usage of a visually-impaired person? The institution would explore such modalities," said an official.

The institute would also look in the issues concerning the senior citizens, whose population is on the rise.

NIIUD would target on the promotion of inclusive development in rural and urban pockets for PwDs. The institute would educate environmental design professionals regarding universal design.

The announcement for setting up the NIIUD was made in union Budget of 2014-15. The 2011 census had revealed that PwDs represent 2.2% of India's population.
