Mumbai fire: Braveheart perishes after saving 6, police make family wait for body

A man from Mumbai was yesterday robbed of his life in a courageous attempt to save people from a blazing building fire.

Twenty-eight year old Tausif Shaikh succumbed to the deadly fire in his strive to save residents from the burning tower of Lake Home in Powai.

Finding the building engulfed in a raging fire, Tausif, a resident of a chawl, boldly ran to save those stuck in the blaze. He managed to save nearly five to six people but on his third attempt he got stuck in the lift.

When fire officials reached the spot, he was reportedly found dead.

"Tausif ran immediately to the building after realising that it was on fire. He successfully saved a few people but in his last attempt, he got stuck in the lift and later we were told that we have lost the braveheart", remarked Tausif's neighbour, Waseem Mulla.

Tausif used to undertake contract jobs at real estate sites and was the only earning member of his family.

Naseerulla Shaikh, Tusif's father is inconsolable. The burden of running the family now rests on his old and fragile shoulders as his other son is mentally challenged.

While the family wanted to take the body away for final rites, the body remained at HL Hiranandani Hospital, Powai.

After the dreadful loss of their son, the family was subjected to a prolonged delay in the form of an elongated post-mortem by the police.

As the delay in the post-mortem became an issue, the local residents approached their MP Poonam Mahajan, who appealed to the police for a speedy post-mortem.

According to the relatives, the place of conducting the post-mortem remains an issue.

Although the body lies at the Hiranandani Hospital, the medical procedure will be conducted at Rajawadi Hospital.
