World Belief System: Disagreements of Muslims and Christians over Jesus Christ
  • There are repeated biblical references of Jesus Christ being the son of God but it makes no sense to Muslims as the Holy Quran says, "He begets not, nor is He begotten"
  • Muslims believe in Jesus Christ as much as Christians do
  • Christians believe Jesus Christ was crucified whereas Muslims believe someone was made to appear like Jesus and was crucified

Sept 19, 2016: Muslims believe in Jesus Christ as much as Christians do. The beliefs and cultures of both the religions may be quite different from each other but they both agree on the fact of existence of Jesus Christ. In fact, by no means Muslims can deny his existence as the Holy Quran itself mentions about him, and the miracles he did. The question that arises is how come Christians worship him and Muslims don't? Well, there are little differences here and there which makes the beliefs, and practices of the two religions different from one another. With the goal of trying to understand each other better, jotting down some points of disagreement between Islam and Christianity over Jesus Christ.

To pray or not to pray

Muslims, unlike Christians do not worship Jesus Christ. According to Holy Quran, Jesus Christ was a messenger of God just like Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh). And, it is the duty of the followers of Islam to believe in Allah and his messengers.

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist – it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs. (Quran, Surah4:171)

Son of God

There are repeated biblical references of Jesus Christ being the son of God but it makes no sense to Muslims as the Holy Quran says, "He begets not, nor is He begotten".

He, Allah is One. Allah is He on Whom all depend. He begets not, nor is He begotten; And none is like Him. (Quran, Surah 112:3)

Death of Jesus Christ

Christians and Muslims strongly differ from one another on the death of Jesus Christ. Christians believe Jesus Christ was crucified whereas Muslims believe someone was made to appear like Jesus and was crucified.

According to Quran,
"Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah ." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.(Surah 4:157)

Where as, according to Bible,

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe 3 and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they slapped him in the face.
Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him." 5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"
As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!"(John 19)
