PM Modi: BJP became viable alternative party, thanks to Deendayal Upadhyay

New Delhi, October 10, 2016: On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said it was because of the philosophy of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay the BJP's predecessor party, the Jana Sangh, from being a mere opposition party in the country became a serious alternative for it, against the Congress.

"In a short span of time, one party completed the journey from 'Vipaksh' to 'Vikalp' and this was due to foundations laid by Deendayal," said the Prime Minister at the launch of a series of publications dedicated to Upadhyay.

PM said , Deendayal's biggest contribution was, "Organisation-based political parties".

"D Ram Manohar Lohia spoke about the efforts of Deendayal that resulted in the people getting an alternative to the Congress in 1967," Modi added.

Modi released a 15-volume compendium talking in detail about the key events in the life of Deendayal Upadhyay and the journey of the Jana Sangh, including events like the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war, the Tashkent Agreement, and also the Goa's Liberation.

The compendium talks about related the events leading up to the murder of Upadhyay, in 1967. which was soon after he became Jana Sangh chief.
