‘Investing in tunnel technology can boost Make in India’


Panaji: Investing in tunnelling technology, especially carving out tunnels under water as well as in treacherous terrain like the Western Ghats and the Himalayan range, can boost the Make in India mission, according to a top railway official.

It would save the country a lot of foreign exchange and will dovetail into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision, the top Konkan Railway (KR) official told IANS.

Repairs of the tunnels along the KR track could only be fully undertaken after track doubling, said B.P. Tayal, the Konkan Railway’s chairman and managing director, shortly after Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu formally announced the setting up of the George Fernandes Institute of Tunnel Technology in Margao, in South Goa.

Stating that tunneling expertise has to be developed, Tayal said: “At present whatever doubling we are doing in Jammu and Kashmir, it is designed and supervised by foreigners for us. We are losing a lot of foreign exchange in that and they are not passing the knowledge to us.
The Tunnel Technology institute, being started in partnership with the Goa University, will promote education and research in tunnelling technology, which the country would desperately need for creating connectivity to India’s remotest regions, the official said.

“We need tunnelling technology in the years to come. We would need technology like this and centres of excellence, which would further such technology,” Tayal said, adding underwater tunnelling technology could also be a key area of research and application in the coming years.

Asked whether indigenous tunnelling technology would dovetail into Modi’s vision of Make in India, he said: “Make in India will save a lot of foreign currency. We will have expertise.”

Once considered unfeasible because of the treacherous, loose-soiled and hilly Western Ghats terrain, which it was meant to snake through, the Konkan Railway route now boasts of 91 tunnels and over 2,000 bridges stretching over 736 km starting from Roha terminus in Maharashtra and to Thokur in Karnataka.

The expertise gained by KR’s engineers in tunnelling technology has enabled the Konkan Railway Corporation Limited to pitch and successfully execute railway as well as road tunnelling and bridge construction contracts in India as well as abroad.

KR is currently engaged in constructing tunnels as well as prestigious projects like the bridge over the Chenab river – the highest bridge in the country – in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking about the challenges of doubling the Konkan Railway track and carving out dozens of tunnels all over again on the 736-km-long track, Tayal said: “We had constructed these tunnels in the 1990s. Now we are far ahead in technology and expertise. We know what kind of rocks are there in one tunnel. All we need to do is to start on new tunnels 50 metres away from the present ones”.

“We will use technology which will cause least damage to environment. We have already undertaken a lot of plantation,” he said.

The challenges in drilling tunnels through the Western Ghats were enormous, he said, adding that the cost of construction often ranged between Rs.50 crore and Rs.100 crore per km.

“The tunnels at Pernem, Old Goa and Barcem are the most difficult tunnels on the Konkan Railway route he said, blaming loose soil and ecological risks as major issues.

“We are still struggling with these three tunnels, because you cannot close down the (single) line. But this can be taken care of when we do the doubling, the official added.

Mumbai, May 21, 2017: In line with the government’s Digital India initiative, the Railway Ministry on Sunday launched free Wi-Fi facility at 28 stations on Konkan railway in Maharashtra.

Unlimited free Wi-Fi facility will be provided at 28 stations from Kolad to Madure in the initial phase, according to an official statement issued on Sunday.

The ministry said this facility will help travelling public, commuters and tourists on Indian Railways to access essential information and they could use their time productively while waiting for trains at railway stations.

This initiative is a step towards making a smarter India, it added.

It has informed that the Joispot mobile application provides 2 megabits per second (mbps) speed wireless internet with unlimited uploads.

Indian Railways has tied up with Internet service providers Syscon and Joister for provision of this facility.

The free Wi-Fi internet bandwidth is provided at the stations of Kolad, Mangaon, Veer, Karanjadi, Vinhere, Diwankhavati, Khed, Anjani, Chiplun, Kamthe, Sawarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar, Ukshi, Bhoke and Ratnagiri.

Other stations with availability of free internet under this initiative are Nivasar, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon Road, Kankavali, Sindhudurg, Kudal, Zarap, Sawantwadi Road and Madure.

The system can provide access to about 300 users at bigger stations and about 100 users at smaller stations. (IANS)

Portuguese-era bridges will be audited: Goa PWD Minister Sudin Dhavalikar

Portuguese-era bridges collapsed on Thursday evening at Curchorem, 45 km from Panaji.

Panaji, May 20, 2017: “All Portuguese-era bridges will be audited for their load-bearing capacity,” said Goa’s Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar on Friday.

Dhavalikar’s announcement came a day after three persons were killed when a dilapidated foot overbridge on the Sanvordem river in Curchorem village collapsed.

“We will have to do an audit to ensure that such incidents are not repeated,” Dhavalikar told reporters here.

The bridge was old and was therefore, not used for vehicles. Only pedestrians were allowed to use the bridge.

Over 50 persons fell into the river on Thursday evening at Curchorem, 45 km from Panaji, when the bridge collapsed. While most managed to swim to safety, three persons drowned. At least three people have died and 30 others are missing. (IANS)

Beijing, December 29,2016 : China will build more high-speed railways as part of its efforts to establish a comprehensive transport system during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), according to a white paper issued on Thursday.

The white paper, titled Development of China’s Transport, said China will increase the length of high-speed railways in service to 30,000 km by 2020, which will link more than 80 per cent of its big cities, the Global Times reported.

The country will renovate 30,000 km of expressways and provide tarmac and cement roads and shuttle bus services for administrative villages with the necessary conditions, while all villages will have access to mail service, it said.

China will build commuting circles of one to two hours between the central cities and between central and peripheral cities, and one-hour commuting circles between central cities and key peripheral towns.

With priority focused on public transit, China will speed up the development of its urban rail and bus rapid transit, and other means of high-capacity public transport, according to the white paper.

By 2020, intercity railway networks will be completed in several urban agglomerations including the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta areas.

The white paper said more efforts will be made in cities with 3 million or more residents to form urban rail transport networks, and about 3,000 km of new tracks will be added to the current urban rail transit system.

China will also move to build integrated transport hubs, promote the green and intelligent development of transport services and improve safety in the transport industry, it said.
